How India got tea from China During the 1800s, tea was almost exclusively produced in China. The East India Company, which was ruling India then, hired Scottish botanist and adventurer Robert Fortune to smuggle the tea's plants seeds and secrets out of China and bring them to India. He was dressed as a Chinese merchant and was successful in his expedition. In his lifetime, India's tea production surpassed that of China.
